In 1934 when Sarah Guyton was drum major, the band won its first state championship. It won first place in concert and second place in marching. She went with the band to the Cotton Carnival. The band was composed of eight girls and twenty-seven boys.Sarah also led the band in 1935 and the band won a superior rating at the State Band contest in all three categories: ensemble, marching, and concert. By virtue of the fact that the band had won two years in succession as superior, it would become a Class A band the next year and be judged with more competitive bands. During her senior year at KHS in 1935, Sarah was voted the following in the Who’s Who Contest: Most Popular Girl and also Best All Round Girl. She once again accompanied the Band to the Cotton Carnival. The April 23, 1942, Star Herald had a special section, the “L.S.U. Journalism Students Edition.” An entire page was devoted expressly to the early years of the KHS Band. Included were the 1931 arrival of Mr. W.G. Skipworth, new band director; band concerts; band contests; and drum majors.Following high school graduation, Sarah Guyton went to Mississippi State to college. There she was a member of the Phi Delta Chapter of Chi Omega Sorority and served as its president.L.S.U. Journalism student Stokes Sanders, Jr., Kosciusko native, wrote, “Miss Guyton is now working in Hernando after graduating from State College.” State College later became Mississippi State University. Also, she was a retired teacher from the Inverness Primary School and a member of the Retired Teachers Organization, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Local Chapter. Hernando First Baptist Church and its Book Club were additional memberships.Sarah Guyton married Clement T. Kirk. Their children are son, The Reverend Larry T.
