On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Attala Chapter 2592 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy had the honor of bestowing the “Cross of Military Service” to four men who had served in the Armed Forces.
This cross is presented to Veterans of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam Conflict, and Global War on Terror who had lineal blood descendants of Confederate military personnel. The ceremony held at Ethel Baptist Church, was directed by Patricia Parrish, Recorder of Military Service and Sylvia Purvis, President of the UDC Chapter.
Honored were Loyd George Rone, serving in WW II, a descendant of Augustus Oliver—Private, Company B. 37th Regiment, Alabama Infantry;. James Michael Gibson, serving Vietnam War, descendant of Julius C. Alford, Private, Company I, 39th Regiment Ms. Infantry; Ronald Wade Purvis, serving in Vietnam war, and the Global War on Terror, descendant of R.A. Bryan, Corporal Company F, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Reserves. Also given posthumously was William David Purvis, Sr. a descendant of R.A. Bryan, Corporal of Company F. 3rd Regiment, Georgia Reserves. Accepting this medal, was Mrs. Lanie Purvis, his wife. All men received a medal and plaque honoring them for their service.
