The Kosciusko School Board took care of some housekeeping during its monthly meeting Monday night.
In a brief update, Superintendent Billy Ellzey told the board that the renovations of the auditorium at the Kosciusko Junior High School, long unused due to asbestos and other issues, is slated to reopen for use in early 2020.
A vendor will begin the asbestos removal portion of the project this month, and is expected to complete that phase in three to four weeks. Construction efforts will then be completed in October. District personnel will then begin interior work that should allow for the facility to resume use in early 2020.
With the proposed soccer field project on hold due to costs, Ellzey said some dirt work will be done inside the track area to allow its temporary use for soccer practice.
The final district strategic plan will be presented to the school board at the next meeting, moved to July 15 from its traditional second Monday of each month.
The board approved payment of unused sick days to retiring employees, and also to those custodial employees who will forgo taking vacation time before the fiscal year ends in order to work on the floors in the various school buildings.
The board went into a lengthy executive session before returning to act on any of the proposed personnel items and professional development requests. They tabled action on the hire of Craig Smith as cafeteria manager at Kosciusko Upper Elementary as well as his attendance at the Decide to Succeed session in Brandon from June 17-21.
