A teacher at Kosciusko Junior High School received one of the top awards for educators in Mississippi.
Meagan Walters, an English and language arts teacher was awarded as the “Educator of the Year” at The American Legion Department of Mississippi annual convention in Flowood on Saturday.
Walters was nominated by Philadelphia Post 138.
“This award program is designed to recognize Mississippi teachers who go above and beyond; teachers who participate in the community, churches and local Veterans programs, promoting patriotism,” said Stan Cantrell, education chairperson with American Legion Mississippi. “Numerous nominations are received each year from throughout the state and the competition is severe. Judging is a difficult process, but ultimately recognizes the best of the best.”
Walters has received numerous awards and accolades during her 21 years of teaching including Attala County Teacher of the year, Ethel High School Star Teacher and Greenlee Elementary Teacher of the Month.
“She is active in her community, church, school, and in veteran’s organizations programs and hails from a family tree with many Veterans and first responders,” Cantrell added. “Helping Veterans and educating children on the history and current needs of Veterans is a major goal for Walters. She demonstrates this by helping with Veterans day programs and Patriot's Pen Essay contest in her school.”
Cantrell presented Walters with a plaque and a check to be used for teaching supplies for her classroom.
“Teachers have many out-of-pocket expenses as part of their day-to-day teaching needs,” Cantrell added. “The American Legion welcomes this opportunity to serve the education community by honoring Mrs. Walters and recognizing her patriotic contributions to the children and youth of her community."
Walters has a Master's Degree in Health Education and is currently working toward a Specialist's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is married to Scott who is a Veteran and a teacher and they have three children.
