Principal positions were filled with the board giving its approval of Henry Coats for Upper Elementary and Chris Terry at Middle Elementary.
Other personnel approvals included resignation of Jesse Yates as band director at KHS and moving Steven Culpepper into this position; resignation of Gunner Nichols, Kayla Briscoe, Kristi McElwain, Hannah Watson, Josie Bain and Rachel Burrell; retirement of John Banks and Mary Joyce Wilder; resignation of Susan Nail as KHS girls soccer assistant coach; transfer of Mallory Parker from Upper to Lower taking Starla Breazeale’s teaching unit and Kimberly Dodd along with her assistant Katherine Truss, taking Dusty Kelley’s teaching unit due to her leaving; approving Juawice Cade as full time bus driver for the remainder of the school year; hiring Seana Busbea as teacher at Upper Elementary; Jamario Winters as teacher at Junior High; Rebecca Deason, teacher at Lower Elementary; Kristen Ferguson and Carlie Graves, SPED teachers; Katy Carter and Perry Murphy as certified teachers; revision of Lynn Scribner from AA 25 to AA 29, Donna Wood from AA 7 to AA8 and Sunja Douglas from AA 12 to AA 16 due to governor signing bill allowing college teaching experience to count on MAEP salary scale.
Athletes honored
Athletes in the Kosciusko City Schools were honored and recognized by Supt. Gina Smith and members of the board at the Monday night meeting held in the conference room of the central office.
Band director Jesse Yates told of the accomplishments of the band which included being named a Winds World Championship finalist. Students stood with their coaches as the recognitions were made. Coach Perry Murphy cited Lyntez Merritt for his powerlifting record; Coach Jonathan Jones gave baseball accomplishments. Others were girls track, by Coach Greenleaf and boys track state qualifiers by Coach Derrick Huffman.
In other matters
Warren Greenleaf representing Young Law Group of Jackson, recommended refinancing of MAEP lease for school safety improvements. The board gave its approval for the safety measures which will include alarm systems, cameras and added security at the entrances of all schools. Advertisement for bids on the project will be presented following specifications.
A temporary easement was approved with Jeremy Fowler and the Attala County Board of Supervisors. Approval was given for Megan Walters and Susan Sullian as credit recovery teachers for Junior High and High School.
Request of release of Marlee Kay Musselwhite to another school district was tabled.
With the signatures of 115 students who are interested in the formation of a Gaming (videos) Club, the board gave its approval.
In policy and procedure review, the following approvals were granted: Jana Overstreet for early graduation for the 2017-18 school year; revision to KJH handbook 8th grade compacted math; amending the 2017-2018 school calendar; Kosciusko School District Section 504 Handbook; Kosciusko School District Suicide Prevention Policy for the upcoming school year; custodian calendar for the remaining school year and the upcoming year.
