Kosciusko High School had its first ever Poetry Out Loud contest last week, sponsored by the Student Council. Six students participated in the performances at the Mary Rick Thorton Cultural Center.
The three winners were Alyssa Boston, first place, Elyse Bell, second place, and Alexis Lepard, third place.
Alyssa recited “a song in my front yard” by Gwendolyn Brooks. She is a senior at KHS, a member of student council, and she loves writing and reciting poetry.
Elyse recited “Enemies” by Wendell Berry. Elyse is a junior at KHS who loves rock and roll music and 80s movies.
Alexis recited “A Fixed Idea” by Amy Lowell. Alexis is an artist, singer and musician who uses her talents for God’s will.
Also performing were Altari McBride, a senior who recited “The Paradox” by Paul L. Dunbar; Cierra Allen, a senior who recited “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou and Alexis Rimmer, a senior who recited “Requiem” by Camille T. Dungy. There are various prizes available as students win in state, regional and national levels of the competition.
