Journey Cummins was born July 7, 2016. At four weeks old, she was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumor. At eight and a half months, she underwent surgery resulting in the removal of the tumor and one of her kidneys at Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson.
Since the diagnosis, the lives of Journey and her parents – Ryan and Tara Cummins of Kosciusko - have revolved around doctor visits, hospitals and treatments. Journey’s treatments began with radiation, and she has now undergone four chemotherapy treatments. For the next nine months she will take one treatment weekly.
The couple said coping with their daughter’s illness has been hard, but they have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from so many.
“We are encouraged because we’re told she has a good chance of recovery if she is kept strong. We are thankful to God. Our faith has kept us strong,” said Tara Cummins.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support we have gotten. We are thankful for phone calls, cooked meals, a text message. Whatever the remembrance, we appreciate it,” she said.
A benefit - “Dancing for Journey” - is planned at Barristers’ Hall on the west side of court square at 7 p.m. Friday night to raise funds to help cover Journey’s medical expenses. The event is sponsored by Modern Woodmen, which will match funds from the benefit up to $2,500.
Admission is $30 for couples, $15 for singles, and children will be admitted free. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Pickle’s Drug Store or the Tin Shack. They will also be available at the door.
The event will include a silent auction and concession stand. Door prizes donated by Kosciusko businesses will be awarded throughout the evening.
Fred Grantham will serve as DJ.
