Streets in downtown will have a new look in the coming weeks.
Work has already begun to mark off the roads around downtown in preparation for paint to convert into one-way roads.
“Since it is fair week, we are going to be a little slow at getting the project done,” Mayor Jimmy Cockroft said.
The city has already completed painting on E. Washington Street in front of City Hall and have marked more of E. Washington in front of the First United Methodist Church and E. Jefferson Street in front of Central MS Office Supply. Once those projects are completed, the city will post signs to warn travelers before completing the remainder of the roads.
The Board of Aldermen passed the ordinance in June to make all downtown roads, excluding Huntington, Wells, Monroe and Adams Streets, into one-way roads.
“We want to be sure to spread it out to give drivers plenty of notice; it is not going to all take effect overnight,” Cockroft added.
