Elected to be the next Attala County Chancery Clerk in November, Ward One Alderman Taylor Casey will relinquish his seat on the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen later this month.
According to Mayor Jimmy Cockroft, receipt of Casey’s letter of resignation will set a chain of events to replace him in motion.
At the board’s first meeting of the new year, on Jan. 4, 2020, the Ward One seat will be declared officially vacant. At that time, the board will set a special election date within prescribed date parameters. That special election will likely be held in mid-February. One possible date for the special election is Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Potential candidates can pick up papers at city hall and must turn them in with 50 signatures of registered voters who live within the city limits of Kosciusko at least 20 days prior to the date of the special election. The leeway gives officials time to verify signatures and print the ballots.
Although candidates can collect nomination signatures from across the city, only registered voters of Ward One will be able to participate in the special election to choose the next Ward One aldermen.
