Though spirits were dampened and attendance reduced a bit by severe storms Friday night, those who participated in the Relay for Life were treated to the singing of Lola Cagle and Layna Richardson.
The Attala County Relay for Life, originally scheduled for its outdoor venue near Renasant Bank, was moved to Barrister’s Hall due to the inclement weather.
Cancer survivor Nicki Richardson was emcee for the evening, which also featured retired Kosciusko High School biology teacher Sylvia Blaylock.
Blaylock, a popular and beloved teacher during her career, spoke of both struggles and triumphs in her battle against cancer. She told the audience how vital the support of her husband Nat and the rest of her family was to keeping her strong in her fight.
“Without Christ and my family, I don’t know how I would have made it through,” she said, adding thanks for all those who have participated in and donated to Relay For Life.
After several cancer survivors participated in the indoor Survivor’s Walk, boiled shrimp and crawfish were sold to raise funds.
Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries.
Volunteers give of their time and effort because they believe it is time to take action against cancer.
