Students at Kosciusko Junior High School were challenged to show patriotism and express thanks to those who have served in the military at a Friday morning Salute to Veterans program held at the school.
Guest speaker was Kosciusko High School graduate Sergeant First Class Gene Dismuke, United States Army, serving in the Mississippi National Guard. In his address, he told of his longtime dream of following in his grandfather’s footsteps and fulfilment of that dream by serving in the military. He was introduced by his former teacher, Junior High School Principal Jackie McElwain.
Prior to Sgt. Dismuke’s address, branches of the military were recognized with Lukas Gowan giving the introductions of flag bearers Brittlyn Gillum, United States Army; Robert Pickle, United States Navy; Braylon Truss, United States Coast Guard; Vidyanjali Anbalagan, United States Air Force; Madyson Walton, United States Marines. O’Marion Fleming gave the U.S. flag presentation and Campbell Blaine led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed with prayer by Rance Allen.
Dan Lindsay, introduced by Robin Cain, read “Why I Honor the American Flag,” his winning entry in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest.
Giving a demonstration on the proper folding of the flag were Thomas Sims and Reed Schuler with their introductions made by Meagan Walters. A POW/MIA table was on display with its significance told by Kinley Cain, Payton Odom and Cooper Black. Alexandra West and other students recognized military guests and visitors.
The program closed with First Baptist Church music minister Chris Cauthen singing “God Bless the USA.”
