The memorial bell tower at Lower Elementary School is in place and ready to summon students in the seven pre-K schoolhouses.
The tower, with bright colors corresponding with those of the schoolhouses, was given by the Porter family in memory of Parks Cadman Porter who served for a number of years as Kosciusko High School Principal. His great-grandson James Michael Cain pulled the cord last week for the initial ring of the bell in its new location.
Design for the tower is reminiscent of the work of folk artist L.V. Hull. Tiles made by pre-K students with their names and thumb prints will be placed around a slate seat surrounding the tower. Black border lines separating the colors are inscribed with the words “believe,” “study,” “honesty” and other words describing good character.
Lower Elementary Principal Michelle Nowell said the bell will ring for special activities taking place in the seven schoolhouses. She said a ribbon cutting with the Kosciusko School Board, Mayor Jimmy Cockroft and members of the Porter family is planned.
The bell was originally located on the Porter farm south of Sallis and later moved to the home of the Porters in Williamsville. Mr. Porter served as KHS principal from 1970-1991 and retired following 38 years as an educator.
