A board of directors and steering committee have been named for the proposed Mississippi Native American Museum in Kosciusko.
The museum will be located in the former Leonard’s Department Store building on the south side of the courthouse square. Plans call for presenting the history of the 21 known Indian tribes that lived in Mississippi and highlighting the Kosciusko connection with the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Named to the board of directors are Gerry Taylor, Jimmy Cockroft, Al Chadick, Robbie Robertson, Kim Williams, C.L. Manderson, Kenny Dungan, Dr. Edward Bryant, Doug King, Donna Holdiness, Jewette Battles and Hollis Cheek. They met recently to make preliminary preparations for the museum.
Williams, Battles, Bryant, Cockroft and Cheek were appointed to the steering committee.
“This is a multi-year project and it will require the support of the citizens of Attala County. When completed it will be a first class museum that will add tourists and tourism dollars to our community,” said Cheek.
The first agenda of the foundation is to secure funding for the necessary repairs to the Leonard’s building to prevent further damage to the structure.
“We welcome anyone wishing to be involved in the development of this project to contact one of the board members,” Cheek said.
Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible donation toward the museum may send donations to the Kosciusko-Attala County Community Foundation, c/o KAP, 101 North Natchez Street, Kosciusko, MS 39090.
