Mississippi NAACP President Charles Hampton urged Attala County NAACP members to focus on key efforts under the theme “The Struggle Continues for Justice and Equal Rights.”
“There is a lot going wrong around the state and if we don’t get involved, it is going to continue,” he told the audience who gathered for the 7th Annual
Freedom Award Banquet Saturday night. “My question to you is, ‘What are YOU doing?’”
Hampton said educational opportunity and improvement in the criminal justice system are needed. He also said the NAACP needs to work toward addressing poverty.
“We need to find a way to speak out about poverty. We need to have decent-wage jobs. Eight dollars an hour - you can’t raise a family on $8 an hour,” Hampton said.
He also called for the current state flag retirement, an effort he said is likely to draw threats.
“When we start speaking out on that, we’re going to get threats,” he said. ”It is hard for us to do what we need to do.”
Finally, Hampton said the NAACP needs to help register people to vote and then help get them to the polls.
“If we’re going to bring change to our communities, we need to become doers in our communities,” he concluded.
