A second shooting in Kosciusko Wednesday, in which to potential victims were uninjured, is not suspected of being related to the fatal shooting earlier in the day on Highway 43 N in Kosciusko.
Kosciusko Police Chief Herbert Dew said that shortly after 10 p.m. the department received a call from someone indicating that their vehicle was being followed by another vehicle, starting near Hibbett Sports on Veteran’s Memorial and continuing up Jefferson St. onto the courthouse square area.
The individual provided descriptions of both involved vehicles and police made a traffic stop on the vehicle, noting that there was a handgun in the vehicle. They ran the serial number and learned that the firearm was not reported stolen.
During that stop, the officers received a call to respond to Wellington Cove for a reported shooting. When they arrived on that scene, however, the learned that the shooting had actually occurred on the square and it was related to the suspect vehicle from the earlier stop.
Police issued a BOLO on the vehicle and the Attala County Sheriff’s Department reported the vehicle at America’s Best Value Inn on Veteran’s Memorial.
Two individuals were taken into custody for questioning at that point while the KPD continued to investigate the shooting report. Investigators found shell casings and a live round on the court square near Patterson Jewelers.
The two in custody were then charged in the shooting.
Devonte Stokes, 25, of Lexington, has been charged with aggravated assault and is being held in the Leake County jail on a $20,000 bond.
Tanisha Hannah, 25, of Kosciusko, has been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. She is also being held in the Leake County jail, on a $10,000 bond.
Brian Cain of Cain, Inc., which has a location on the square, reported Thursday morning that the door of his building had been hit by a bullet.
Kosciusko Police Chief Herbert Dew said the motive in the incident remains unknown since the victims and suspects appear to have no connection to one another.
