Traffic along Route 12 was backed up by more than 300 cars headed toward the Helping Hands Ministry last Thursday to receive donated food.
The MS Food Network worked with Helping Hands locally to deliver canned foods and fresh yellow squash collected by the Society of St. Andrews.
In all, ministry director Matt Tucker said he believed the donated items would feed upwards of 1,000 local people who are food insecure.
“It was a huge success. We have people in our area who need food,” he said. “Even though we blocked the highway, we did a great thing today. There is nothing like helping feed someone.”
More than 600,000 Mississippians are believed to be living below the poverty line, casuing them to struggle to feed themselves and their families.
