Like much of the nation, voter turnout in Attala County was brisk. Some 47.83% of the county’s registered voters cast ballots Tuesday. Another 600 or so absentee and provisional ballots were cast, bringing the total local vote rate to 52.7%, but those ballots will not be counted until Wednesday, according to Attala County Circuit Clerk Wanda Fancher.
Louisville attorney Kiley Kirk appears to have bested Kosciusko attorney Rosalind Jordan in the Chancery Court District 6, Place 2 race. While Jordan took Attala County in the Tuesday night unofficial results, Kirk appeared to have won all other counties in the district. Unofficial vote totals across the district were 16,481 for Kirk and 11,162 for Jordan.
Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy will head to a November 27 runoff election for the unexpired U.S. Senate seat since neither won by the required margin. Attala County voters narrowly split the vote between the two — shadowing state-wide results — with only 137 more favoring Hyde-Smith here.
In the other U.S. Senate race, incumbent Republican Roger Wicker easily defeated Democratic challenger David Baria, 3,369 to 2,090.
Democrat Benny Thompson received 49.44% of the Attala County vote in the 2nd Congressional District, with Independent Troy Ray getting 40.40% of the vote.
