With all 20 of Attala County's precincts reporting, incumbent Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith took just shy of 56% of the local vote. Democratic challenger Mike Espy earned the other 44%. The local results closely mimic the statewide tallies being reported this evening.
The Associated Press has called the race in Hyde-Smith's favor with just over 80% of the states precincts reporting.
Some 47.7% of Attala County's 12, 225 registered voters cast ballots in today's runoff election between the two. Hyde-Smith received 3,254 votes to Espy's 2,559, with three write-in votes logged by Attala County Circuit Clerk Wanda Fancher.
Between 400 and 500 walk-up, absentee and provisional ballots have yet to be counted and precinct-by-precinct results are not yet available.
Eight of Attala County's 20 precincts also voted in the Appeals Court, District 2, Place 1 race between Eric Hawkins and Deborah McDonald. McDonald took the race with 1,231 votes to Hawkins' 925 votes, with another five voters casting write-in votes.
