Plans are moving forward for the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative ceremonies in Kosciusko, with events set for Saturday evening along with Monday morning.
The 19th annual Image Award Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the commons area of Kosciusko High School. A social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The 2017 Image Award will be for community patriotism with additional awards being presented for community, education and political service. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased from any member of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee of Kosciusko/ Attala County. A table of six (6) may be purchased for $110.
Festivities will continue on the Monday holiday with a 9 a.m. prayer in front of City Hall and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration at 10 a.m. at the Kosciusko High School gym. The prayer will be led by Pastor Katherine Weatherby, pastor of Mt. Pilgrim M. B. Church of McCool. Dwight Luckett of Madison, who served as the interim superintendent of the Kosciusko School District from Aug. 2015 until Dec. 2015, will serve as the keynote speaker for the birthday celebration.
Students will be awarded prizes for best posters and essays at the birthday celebration and a senior will win a $500 scholarship to the school of their choice.
