Following the Friday death of the young woman injured in a May 16 shooting incident, Ryan Louis Steen, 21, was expected to appear in Attala County Justice Court Wednesday morning to face upgraded charges.
On Tuesday, Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail said the charges against Steen had been upgraded to murder and his bond was increased from $100,000 to $500,000.
Steen had been arrested by Winston County Sheriff’s deputies at the Louisville Walmart on May 16 following the shooting in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 16, 2019.
According to Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail, his department responded to 13644 Highway 12 West around 12:45 a.m. on May 16 following the report of a shooting at that location. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a female had been shot in the chest.
The victim was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Attala and later airlifted to a Jackson hospital, where she eventually succumbed to her injuries last Friday.
At around 10:30 a.m. on May 16, hours after the shooting, Winston County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to a tip concerning Steen, who had reportedly been seen at the Louisville Walmart. WSO officers responded in unmarked vehicles and took Steen into custody without incident.
A firearm believed to be the one used in the shooting was recovered from the suspect, according to both Attala and Winston county sheriffs’ offices.
