The third quarterly meeting of the Attala County Forestry Association was called to order by president Lance Woodard. Woodard made announcements concerning the USDA Farm Service Agency. County election dates for nominations and the final voted dates have been set. The conservation Reserve Program (CRP) continuous enrollment period will end on August 17.
After a meal of red beans and rice, Brady Self of the Mississippi State University Extension Service presented the program on herbicides for forestry and wildlife.
According to Self, the proper use of herbicides on plants will increase the production of trees and enhance wildlife population.
In using herbicides, there are a few things one must do in order to be cautious in the use and application: read the label, it is a legal document and wear protective equipment when applying the herbicide.
The reason for using herbicides is for vegetation control and cost effective. Prescribe fire is used, but there are more regulations and greater liability.
Some of the herbicides that are available are Arsenal AC, Acord SP, ART, ART II, etc. and Escort XP. These herbicides will control certain plants. There are many brands of herbicides and choices have to be made as to be best ones for a particular application.
Three treatments for forestry are site prep, herbaceous weed control and release selection herbicides.
Food plots can be used as a management tool for quality vegetation management for private landowners. To use this tool will depend on available acreage, poor protection during drought years and elimination by overabundant deer and expense.
One of the least expensive and most effective method for killing certain species is the hack and squirt method of using arsenal.
