Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail has reported that the mother of 20-month-old Jasmine Irwin, who died Sunday afternoon, has been charged with capital murder.
Tami McKee, aka Tami Mann, was charged in the murder of her daughter Thursday, and she is being held in the Attala County Jail. Mann could face the death penalty if convicted.
Nail said Mann and the baby's father, Jasper Irwin, were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon. The father has not been charged in the death, but Nail said the investigation is ongoing.
Mann has five other children, with all of them now being in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Human Services placed in foster homes. Nail said DHS has been involved with the family for some time and no other child abuse allegations had ever been made against Mann.
The one-year-old was taken off life support Sunday and died. She had been airlifted to University of Mississippi Medical Center after first being taken to Baptist Medical Center-Attala on Friday with severe head injuries.
Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail confirmed the child had a fractured skull, which was the cause of death, as well as other injuries. Nail also confirmed the child had been in the custody of her mother when she was hospitalized.
An autopsy of the child was performed and forensic interviews were being conducted with the child’s siblings Tuesday morning. Authorities have also interviewed the little girl’s parents.
