The City of Kosciusko Board of Aldermen voted to move forward towards a proposal that will turn many streets in the downtown area into one-way roads.
According to Mayor Jimmy Cockroft the main purpose behind the proposal is to provide a better defenition of parking in downtown, increase safety and provide bike lanes around the square.
An ordinance, which will be presented at the June 1 meeting, must be approved before the proposal is finalized.
See the May 26 edition of The Star-Herald for more information.
The proposal presented is as follows:
•Washington Street would be One Way from Mayor’s Office to Pickle & White Law Office running West.
•Jefferson Street would be One Way from Touch of Class Taxidermy to the Town Pump running East.
•Natchez Street would be One Way from NE Corner of First United Methodist Church to Redbud Springs Park running South.
•Jackson Street would be One Way from Monroe Intersection to Adams Intersection running North.
•Madison Street would be One Way from Doug Crosby’s Law Office to Monroe Intersection running South.
•The outer limit streets of the Downtown of Huntington, Wells, Monroe, and Adams would all get crosswalks at their respective intersections with the inner streets.
•Monroe Street would be the only outer limit street to get bike lanes and they would be dual direction bicycle lanes while keeping Monroe a Two Way Street because of its width.
•Madison Street in front of the Strand Theater, Natchez Street in front of Lindsay Wealth Management, and Washington Street in front of the Chancery Clerk’s office would have parking on both sides due to width.
•This leaves only the gap between the end of State Maintenance on Huntington (About 250 feet from Coleman/Gilliland Intersection) and the Intersection of Huntington and Monroe without a segregated bicycle lane from the NTP and the CBD.
