After sitting on the shelf for years, plans for a new station for the Attala County Sheriff’s Office are moving forward.
At the Attala County Board of Supervisors meeting Monday morning, Sheriff Tim Nail told county board more details about the move to a county-owned building on Ridgewood Circle in Kosciusko.
Currently the Sheriff’s Office, which was constructed in 1957, is located on West Adams Street. The Supervisors voted in September to close the adjoining jail.
“The big reason for relocating is that the current building has a mildew problem,” supervisor president Kerry Ellington said.
“We already owned it and haven’t had any prospects wanting to lease it for over a year and a half,” Board attorney Scott Pickle added.
The new facility was the former home of the Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital rehab center, sitting behind the current Baptist Attala Hospital. The building was taken over by the county after to closure of the Montfort Jones Hospital two years ago.
“The building is already owned by the county and most of the work needed on the facility is being done by the counties maintenance man,” Nail said. “This building is so much more functional and will give us a lot more room and better evidence lockup.”
Another plan to move the justice court to the north side of Kosciusko at the former home of the Attala Educational Center has been in the works for months.
In other business the supervisors voted to move forward to draft a resolution naming Dr. Scott Wright as a chaplain for the Sheriff’s Office. Wright currently serves as a chaplain for the Kosciusko Police Department.
Other action taken by the supervisors:
• approved a bid of $5,000 for computer upgrades at the tax collector’s office;
• agreed to advertise to sell propane tanks at the former Jack Post building by sealed bid;
• approved a master rental agreement requested by the state;
• renewed a copy machine lease for the circuit clerk;
• approved a tax refund request from Sheila Yuille;
• approved travel for Mississippi Association of Planning and Development District Conference in Biloxi;
• approved a payment of $9,000 for printing and mailing tax statements.
