The Attala County School Board will begin a full search for a superintendent following the state legislature decision requiring all Mississippi school superintendents be appointed following the current term of any elected superintendent.
The board will use the Mississippi School Board Association to assist in the search, with current Superintendent Bryan Weaver’s term set to expire in December, 2019.
Weaver, a native of Attala County who is in his second term, has more than 20 years of serving schools in the county.
Following the motion to undertake the full search during the Monday night meeting, board members told Weaver they hope he will apply for the position.
Weaver said he feels there is a chance of getting someone outside the district or even outside the state who would not have the interest that an elected local person would typically have.
“I will weigh my options and do what is best for my family,” said Weaver about applying to continue in the position.
In personnel matters, Michael Huffman and Jo Ann McDonald were named lead teachers at McAdams High School to serve as assistant principals. Emergency license approval was granted for Jason McCuller. Approval to enter into a contract for school improvement services died due to lack of a motion.
Jana Guillote and Casey Johnson, staff members at Ethel High School, met with board members and presented an evaluation of Principal Patrick Boyle conducted by teachers at the school. Mrs. Guillote cited his concerns for safety, concern for students, improved graduation rate and other attributes that they believe been have beneficial to the school.
Bus easements were approved for Sabrina Young, Ross Bowie/Don Bowie and Lou Jean Erving/L.D. Erving.
