Attala County officials are finalizing an ordinance to install a work program to help keep the county clean.
The county board of supervisors agreed to move forward to finalize the program and have all local judges sign off on it. The measure would allow those charged with fines by the county to work off their fines at a minimum wage rate.
The program, which is currently being used by the city of Kosciusko, is geared to clean up county roads when the litter control program ended after the closing of the Attala County Jail last year.
“The only thing I see that we will need to get this program rolling is a vehicle to transport,” Attala County Sheriff Tim Nail told the supervisors. “We have a deputy that is trained in this program, so that won’t be an issue.”
An ordinance is expected to be presented to the supervisors at their next meeting.
In other business the supervisors passed a new ordinance limiting hours for night clubs in the county. The ordinance will force bars in the county to close by midnight and have all patrons cleared from the facility by 12:30 a.m.
“This gives us a little more legal ground with the bars in the county,” county attorney Scott Pickle said.
The measure passed by a 4-1 vote with District 4 supervisor Kary Ellington voting against.
Other action taken by the supervisors:
• rehired Matt Steed as the school resource officer for Attala County Schools;
• approved a bid of $9,458.50 for elevator repair at the library;
• approved a school bus turn-around for Joe C. Thompson;
• approved a settlement with MASIT for a wrecked Sherriff patrol vehicle;
• allowed the county clerk to deposit funds into the county depository.
The next scheduled meeting of the Attala County Board of Supervisors is set for April 17 at 9 a.m. in the Attala County Chancery Court building.
