Qualifying has been confirmed after deadline came and past two weeks ago for the upcoming municipal elections. A sixth candidate was entered into the Ethel alderman race, invoking an election that will take place on June 6. Mitchell, Patricia Bouley, Lyda Fair, Paul Stewart and Amy Thrasher were released as candidates by city officials last Monday. However, The Star-Herald has learned that Laura Sanders has also qualified for the election.
Current Ethel mayor, Mitchell, chose not to run for re-election with three qualifying for her spot. Gwen Sims, Anthony Jerome and Wade Breazeale all qualified for the position.
In Kosciusko Dorothy Patrick will challenge mayor Jimmy Cockroft, while the alderman-at-large and aldermen and ward one and two will see a challenger. Billy Coffee will challenge Tim Kyle, while Rafael Douthard will challenge Taylor Casey and Cheryl Bayne will challenge Henry Daniel.
All candidates in the Kosciusko election qualified as a Democrat, so they will face off in the primary on May 2. No general election will be held in Kosciusko.
