The Attala County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a fundraiser this Saturday at the Attala County Coliseum with activities starting at 11 a.m.
The event is intended to raise proceeds for the purchase a new K-9 for the department that has been without the aid of a tracking and drug dog since the passing of Brock, a German Shepard, this past October.
“All of this is going strictly for the purchase of our new K-9. This dog is trained in drug detection, which will be used for checking our schools and also for search warrants and other things of that nature. It is also trained to track, which means if we have a lost child or a lost hunter this dog is supposedly able to track them down,” said Sheriff Tim Nail.
The dog has other skills, as well.
“It is also an apprehension dog. If we have an armed robbery, the dog will be able to track them and apprehend the individual,” said the Sheriff. “Also, if someone is barricaded in a house, we can send the K-9 unit in instead of a deputy.”
Victor, the K-9 to be purchased with the raised funds, will be on site as well as Southern State Canine from Hattiesburg. Southern State Canine trained and are the current owners of the Belgium Malinois that they are offering to the Attala County Sheriff’s Department.
The fundraiser will include bouncing houses and train rides, which will cost $5 for all day access and there will be food available, as well. Hamburger plates will be sold for $7 each and there will be an auction, cake sale and a dunking booth. The dunking booth will be $5 for three balls, giving participants a chance to dunk several law enforcement officers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Attala County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, who have volunteered for the activity.
“Come out and take a hit at one of them,” said Nail. “I think this K-9 will be a huge asset to Attala County and hopefully folks will come out and support us.”
