Two 18-wheelers from the same company, each full of corn, collided on the southbound side of Hwy. 35 just after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9.
The front truck had stopped for an oncoming school bus picking up a student.
As the front truck waited for the school bus lights to go out, the second truck came up over a rise and struck the first. The front truck tipped partially off the road while the second went down the embankment and struck a tree. The school bus was not involved in the collision and was able to proceed on its route, but the drivers of both trucks were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ashley Cain, who lives at 25560 Highway 35 — and whose son was being picked up by the bus — said she was not surprised that such an incident happened in front of her house.
“The thing that worries me is people haul butt up and down this road passing each other. It is like a race strip right here, and my son gets on the bus and off the bus right here every day,” she said.
