The Town of Sallis will hold a public hearing at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon in Sallis Town Hall to gain citizen input on a proposed grant application to fund construction of a water system booster station off Attala Road 4110.
According to Mayor Jack Ables, the hearing is an early step in a six-month process to apply for the $450,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state.
In addition to the hearing, the town’s meter reader is currently surveying Sallis residents on income levels in the hope that the rates of low- and moderate-income residents will increase the chances of the town being awarded the grant.
Other steps are likely to include a review of the water district financial state and environmental reviews.
If the project moves forward, the station will help prevent low water pressure resulting from line breaks or a system flush, according to Ables.
In all the water district serves approximately 1,050 people in western Attala County.
The Mayor said he has written citizens a letter explaining the need to collect generalized household and income information to help the town qualify for the grant monies.
This application comes on the heels of Sallis completing an earlier grant-funded project adding new customers to the system and installing a new water well.
The North Central Planning and Development district is assisting the town with the grant application.
