Repairs at the Attala County Courthouse and the need for a new county jail were identified as problems by a grand jury in its report after the September circuit court term.
The grand jury inspected the Attala County Courthouse and Attala County Chancery Court Building on September 7, but did not have the opportunity to inspect the former jail after its closing early last month.
“We were unable to inspect the jail due to the jail closure,” the grand jury report stated. “The grand jury believes Attala County needs a new jail facility.”
Courthouse repairs pointed out in the report include a tear in flooring by the elevator, cracks in the floor tiles inside and uneven tiles throughout the building. The report also stated that the justice court office floor slopes and needs more storage space and that the outside of the entire courthouse needs to be cleaned and painted.
“There are cracks in the brick on the outside of the entire courthouse between first and second floor,” the report said. “The east side steps outside are uneven. The south side air conditioning unit is causing slippery mold outside on the concrete. There are exposed wires that need to be covered on the southwest corner at the basement entrance. Entrances to basement on outside of courthouse needs to be repaired and locked. There are exposed pipes in the janitor office and tile is torn in hallway at the judges’ chamber door.”
The only issued brought up in the report at the chancery court building was a janitor closet that needs to be locked and that the door does not fit the frame.
No other deficiencies were reported at the chancery court building.
