The Mississippi Forestry Services says it is closing its office in Attala County.
Beth McClellan, president of the Attala County Forestry Association, told the Attala County Supervisors Monday morning that it received the letter at its meeting last week.
Attala County is part of the East Central Forestry District, which is based in Philadelphia.
“Attala County is one of the top three or four counties in Mississippi as far as volume of timber is concerned,” Attala County Forestry Association president Beth McClellan said. “The forestry office is extremely important to Attala County.”
In other action McClellan asked the Board of Supervisors to consider expanding the forestry association meeting room at the Mississippi State Extension Service building.
“We have one of the most active forestry associations in the state, and we are bursting out at the seams with standing room only at our quarterly meetings,” McClellan said. “We want to extend the meeting space by knocking out a wall into the hallway if possible.”
The Supervisors voted to table the action until they could inspect what needs to be done.
Other action taken by the Supervisors include
• approving payments totaling $24,939.92 to Gardner Engineering;
• approved a pair of school bus turnarounds on the property of James Blount, Sr. and Lavoy Grantham;
• approved a request to appoint a special prosecutor for a case in the justice court;
• unanimously agree to become a member in the National Association of Counties.
