West civic news
For the month of January, because of the cold, we met in the home of Ruth Aldridge. Eleven members enjoyed Mrs. Adielaide Burge Chapman, a house mother in Oxford, showing us some of her collection of silver. She explained the different grades of pure silver. There is also silver plate that is real popular. Adielaide told of several different ways to show off silver settings, such as using a complete different pattern for each quest, combining with pottery, or crystal. She also told us how to clean and store our silver to keep it in good condition. Adielaide stores hers in plastic zip lock bags but stressed that they should be placed where they will not get too hot or too cold as that might cause the plastic to stick to your piece and cause pitting. There are also many types of cleaners.
The business for this month:

The president then reported on the heating situation for the club and it was decided by the members present that we would rent a propane tank and get fuel from Scott Petroleum. Information on the grant work and roof repairs were discussed with the members. The meeting was then adjourned.
The February meeting was held at the club house on Wednesday, Feb. 20. There were 10 members present. The speaker for our meeting was Toni Borst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glyn Dickerson. Toni works for Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS), in Madison. Toni gave a brief run-through of some of the different programs that MDRS has for helping people from babies to seniors, housing, job training, medical supplies. It is quite a list of services this organization provides. They help the blind, deaf, disabled, people with strokes. If you need help or need information, just call Toni Borst at 601-853-5619 or her cell, 1-601-540-7246, and she will point you in the right direction.
The business meeting was brought to order with the reading of our prayer, led by Suzanne and Mitizi led us in the pledge of allegiance.
The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was read and approved.
Our president then reminded us we need to start getting ideas together for our annual school reunion, held the first Saturday of May. Anyone who has gone to the school is welcome to attend. This is a fund raising project for the club. If anyone who has attended school and would like more information, please call the club President Carol Black at 662-967-2062.
Carol mentioned that we need to seriously start thinking of people that we would like to see in the positions of officers for the coming year. We need to have these ideas presented at our April meeting so that they may be installed at our May meeting.
Our grant for repairs on the club building has been sent in to Archive and History and is awaiting approval. The work of repairing our roof has begun.
Billie Aldridge’s 90th birthday will be celebrated March 16, 2019, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church off Highway 440. They request no gifts.
Our members read the collect and adjourned.
