The definition of a major league baseball no hitter was changed by the MLB Committee on Statistical Accuracy in 1991. Prior to then a pitcher was credited with a no hitter if he pitched nine hitless innings but gave up a hit in extra innings or pitched hitless ball in a game that lasted less than nine innings.
