Demolition equipment busily demolishes the former Attala County Jail on Adams Street as county officials move forward with plans to tear down the aging structure, which has stood in Kosciusko since 1957. The Attala County Board of Supervisors in January had accepted a $22,500 bid from Cain Construction to demolish the long-condemned facility after years of structural problems, plumbing failures and repeated state citations. The jail, which was expanded in 2003 under then-Sheriff William Lee, officially closed in 2016 after the Mississippi Department of Corrections cited overcrowding, outdated locking systems, poor ventilation and unsafe conditions. Sheriff Curtis Pope said most salvageable materials had already been removed from the building, while black mold and decades-old plumbing issues remained throughout portions of the facility.
From staff reports
Projected prices proved providential as Attala County supervisors Monday, May 4 morning accepted lower than expected bids on a Beat Three road project.
The county board also heard numbers on maintenance of a generator for the central fire station and got an update on updates for the veteran’s affairs office.
