French Camp senior C.J. Johnson signed to play football at Northwestern University Wednesday.
“After much prayer and consideration, I’m proud to announce that I will continue my athletic and academic endeavor at Northwestern University,” Johnson said during a signing ceremony at the French Camp gymnasium.
He played quarterback and defensive back for the Panthers the past two years, but was recruited by Northwestern as a receiver, a position he played his freshman and sophomore seasons.
Johnson originally committed to the U.S. Naval Academy, but reopened his recruitment after receiving offers from several Division I schools.
Northwestern is highly rated academically and the football team played in the Big Ten championship game two of the past three years.
“I saw they were winning in the classroom and winning on the field,” Johnson said. “At Northwestern, I have an opportunity to get a top 10 degree and play for a top 10 program.”
He plans to study business or premed.
