With just a little more than a week before the Feb. 5 qualifying deadline, only the Alderman-At-Large race has more than one qualified candidate.
For the Mayor’s race, no one has filed yet, though current Alderman-At-Large Tim Kyle has announced he is seeking the post. Mayor Jimmy Cockroft has said he will retire at the end of the current term.
For Alderman-At-Large, two candidates have qualified so far to replace Kyle as he seeks the Mayor’s office — Earl Price (D) and Randy Fuller (D). It is currently the only contested race.
Ward One Alderman James Culpepper this week announced his bid for re-election, but has not filed qualifying papers yet.
Ward Two Alderman Henry Daniels (D) has already qualified, as has Ward Four Alderman Jeffery Woods (D).
Ward Three Alderman Robert Ellis has announced his reelection bid, but has not filed the requisite paperwork yet.
Potential candidates must submit information at City Hall during the qualifying period, which started Jan. 4 and ends Feb. 5.
Those declaring party affiliation need to submit a $10 check with their qualifying paperwork and Independent candidates have to submit 50 signatures from his/her ward or from the entire city if running at-large.
Primary elections will be held on Tuesday, Apr. 6, with Apr. 27 scheduled for any primary runoffs. The general election will be Tuesday, June 8.
