GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) — A major thoroughfare in a Mississippi coast city is about to get wider.
Plans to widen Martin Bluff Road in Gautier have been underway since the 1990s, The Sun Herald reports. Last month, a Gulf Coast contractor was given the green light to begin construction.
When the project is finished, the two-lane roadway will be transformed into a road large enough to accommodate a shoulder with curbs, gutters, a median and intermittent turn bays in the center lane.
The road will have sidewalks on both sides for a mile leading to a Martin Bluff Elementary School and on one side for another 2 1/2 miles.
The contractor for the $7.5 million widening project is Gulf Breeze Construction. Moran Hauling has been handling the $700,000 sidewalk work. Completion is expected in mid-2023.
The sidewalks are being paid for with a Mississippi Department of Transportation grant, and funding for widening is pieced together from city, state and federal funds. The project also received support from the Gulf Regional Planning Commission.
