Chandler Pittman hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass from Zach Wilcke on a fourth down play with 32 seconds left in the game as Southern Mississippi stunned Texas State, 20-14. The Bobcats had scored only 50 seconds earlier on a 74-yard pass. The Golden Eagles (4-3, 2-1) dominated the game on defense as they controlled the line of scrimmage. They also held Texas State to minus 6 yards rushing as they had a season high 12 tackles for loss. Frank Gore Jr. now has 2,077 yards with his 91 yards on Saturday. USM will host Louisiana-Lafayette (4-3, 2-2) on Thursday, with a 6:30 p.m. scheduled kickoff on ESPN2.
Ole Miss traveled to Death Valley last Saturday and fell to LSU, 45-20. The Rebels grabbed a 17-3 lead, but LSU, behind quarterback Jayden Daniels, closed within a field goal at halftime. Daniels ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more on the day. Ole Miss started lightning fast outgaining the No. 18 Tigers 200-80 in the first quarter, but LSU, led by freshman linebacker Harold Perkins, stalled the Rebels offense over the final three periods. Ole Miss (7-1, 3-1) will visit Texas A&M (3-4, 1-3) this Saturday. The loss dropped the Rebels to 15th in the latest AP poll.
It was a very tough week for the Mississippi State Bulldogs as they lost offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland, who died suddenly last Wednesday. The team had to travel to Tuscaloosa to battle No. 6 Alabama on Saturday. MSU played inspired football in the beginning against the Crimson Tide but fell, 30-6. In the first half, the MSU offense failed at the Tide’s 15-yard line and their own 29-yard line on fourth down plays. The Bulldog defense held the Alabama offense to its lowest net total of the year of 290 yards. The unranked Bulldogs (3-3, 2-3) have an open date before hosting Auburn.
ESPN “Gameday” will make a historic stop at Jackson State this Saturday from 8-11 a.m. Jackson State stayed unbeaten as they won their Homecoming game, 22-14, over Campbell before 56,600 fans in Veterans Stadium on Saturday. The Tigers are now 8-0 as they are set to host Western Division SWAC Leader Southern University (5-3,3-1) this Saturday at 1 p.m. Alcorn (3-4, 2-2) lost to Texas Southern, 34-27. The Braves will travel to Grambling this week while Mississippi Valley fell in the final minute to Bethune Cookman, 45-35.
Delta State keeps moving up as they were ranked eighth nationally last week. The Statesmen (8-0, 5-0) ran all over Shorter in a 45-10 win last week. Mississippi College (4-4, 3-2) fell to West Florida, 45-17, and will now host DSU on Saturday night. Belhaven ran over Southern Virginia, 42-6, and will host LaGrange while Millsaps fell to Rhodes College, 31-7. The Majors will play at Berry College this Saturday.
Northwest Community College football has clinched the MACCC North Division regular-season championship while second place is up for grabs. East Mississippi, Northeast and Itawamba enter the final week, all 3-2 in North play. East Mississippi will travel to Delta, Northeast will host Northwest and Itawamba will host Coahoma. In the South Division, Jones will be either the top seed or runner-up depending on the outcome of their game on Thursday night at Gulf Coast. The winner of the game will be the top seed. If Jones (5-0) wins, then the No. 2 seed will be Gulf Coast (4-1), Pearl River (3-2) or Hinds (3-2) depending on the outcomes of their games. If Jones loses, then they will be the second seed. PRC will host East Central while Hinds travels to Co-Lin on Thursday.
The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced the selections for the 2023 Hall of Fame Induction Class. Jeff Herrod (Ole Miss), John Mangum (Alabama), Patrick Surtain (USM), Lewis Tillman (JSU), Paul Maholm (MSU), Jim Page (Millsaps), Jim Rosetti (Ole Miss) and Carol Ross (Ole Miss) are the newest members.
