Virtual learning, Google classroom, Zoom, these are words that I, as a student from the school of face-to-face, teacher-to-student, have found very overwhelming to comprehend.
I believe the one word I would take as an infringement would be zoom. I know, and you probably know this about yourself, if I am doing all my classroom learning by computer from my kitchen, I will be in my pajamas, with bedhead hair, and au natural.
Take my word for it, no teacher or instructor would want to see me with a Zoom camera.
I have to say that this is the only thing one of my grandsons absolutely refused to let happen, Zoom. He too felt as if he could not easily be on camera with his teachers. When I think of the word “zoom” I think about pulling something or someone in on a close-up and I just feel awkward.
One day this past week, as I walked into my daughter’s home, there they sat, all three of them, two students and one certified school teacher. One is being home schooled, the other a virtual learner.
I believe it was the very first day of school and they seemed to be in a confused and frenzied session of learning. It was the very first day of the very first time of this type of teaching and learning so to be fair, it was expected to be somewhat chaotic.
The virtual high school student wore headphones so as to drown out the talking/teaching of the other learner.
And, the poor teacher is dividing her time between a seventh grader and a tenth grader, so much variation in lessons. She goes from seventh grade division to the teaching demonstration of Geometry. It is such a good thing she got a degree from Mississippi State to be a certified school teacher just for this reason.
Then I wonder how it would have been at my house when my children were in school if I would have had to do this unusual type of teaching and helping my learners.
I dare say my three would still be struggling to finish high school.
My hat is off to the teachers, coaches and other educators as they “trial and error” this most unusual school year.
It will sometimes be hit and miss, but I really believe once we get all the crimps and crinkles and the curves and crooks worked out, the end result will be, “Yes! We did it!”
I get tired of the same old same old for breakfast. This is a delicious meal.
