A week of summer fun making memories with swimming, boating, sailing, horseback riding, wall climbing, zip lining, craft making, pottery, rafting and more could be the dream of most youngsters.
At Camp of the Rising Son in French Camp, 970 campers have had memory making experiences during the annual camp season spending a week on the sprawling acreage.
Director Carrie Browning said the campers have come from states ranging from Washington D.C. to California, with Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and from throughout Mississippi included. A native American theme is carried out in the rustic cabins with the camp director addressed as Chief Browning.
A counselor is assigned to each of the rustic cabins and conducts Bible studies and assists the campers through activities of each day.
Browning said campers especially enjoy the themes which are carried out on designated days. They include Outer Space, Olympics, Christmas in June, Amazing Race, Wild West and a Rodeo. Making stew over a campfire rates high on the list of favorites.
An awards ceremony on Saturday morning brings the camp experience to a close.
Chief Browning is in her ninth year as director of the camp with a total of 19 years spent as a camper and a counselor.
Camp Intern Adventure is incorporated into the camping program. It is offered to 15-17 year-olds who are given lessons in preparation of becoming a counselor.
