At the Saturday Natchez Trace Festival, the Attala County Future Farmers of America launched its first FFA Petting Zoo. In an effort to teach children and instill a love of animals, the petting zoo had chickens, ducks, rabbits, turtles, a dog, a goat, a dairy calf, a snake and an alligator. Not only were children able to learn and ask questions, but they were also encouraged to touch the creatures.
The annual FFA plant sale adjoined the zoo. Flowers, herbs and vegetable plants were available for those with green thumbs. Marigolds, zinnias, moss rose, cilantro, basil, oregano, lemon grass, dill, okra, squash, eggplant, cucumber and tomato plants can still be purchased at the Career Tech at a discounted price.
Ms. Jackie Henn-Kerr from the Natural Science Museum brought the alligator, snake and turtles. She informed the public about reptiles. Dodd Dairy Farm donated the Jersey calf and the Mitchells from McCool donated the show goat. The materials to construct fencing were provided by Attala County Co Op and Scarborough Building Supply. Special thanks to Vocational Director Mr. Holder, Alderman Henry Daniel and the KAP staff for assistance.
