Paid Political Announcement:
Established Mississippi attorney Alan D. “Devo” Lancaster of Grenada is vying for election to the Fifth Circuit judge’s seat. The special election will be held on Nov. 8 to fill the seat vacated by the late Judge George Mitchell, who passed away earlier this year.
“I believe my experience sets me apart as a candidate,” Lancaster said. “I have spent my entire career practicing in Mississippi’s courtrooms in both criminal and civil matters. I’ve also been a sitting municipal judge for the past 20 years, presiding over preliminary hearings which determine if sufficient evidence is present to continue a case to the circuit court.”
As a municipal judge — in Winona (2010-present) and Grenada (2000-2008) — Lancaster also issues rulings based on local and state law in cases against individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses.
“I believe in following the law as it is written, free from influence,” Lancaster said.
The same can be expected if Lancaster is elected as judge for the Fifth Circuit Court.
“If elected judge of the Fifth Circuit Court, I can only promise three things. I will follow the law. I will hand down rulings fairly and impartially. And I will insist that all who come before me be treated with the utmost respect and dignity,” he said.
Lancaster has been a licensed attorney in the State of Mississippi for 44 years. Currently, he is a partner in the Lancaster Taylor Law Firm in Winona.
As an attorney, Lancaster has maintained a Preeminent A-V rating by Martindale-Hubbell for 40 years, the highest rating for both legal and ethical standards, and was awarded the Client Distinction Award by Martindale-Hubbell.
He is a member of the Mississippi Bar and American Bar foundations and is a member of the Mississippi State Bar Association, American Bar Association, Montgomery County Bar Association, and Grenada County Bar Association.
He has served as attorney for the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and Montgomery County Economic Development for more than 30 years.
With a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mississippi (1971) and a master’s degree in School Administration (1975) from Mississippi State University, Lancaster received his juris doctorate from the University of Mississippi Law School in 1978.
Before pursuing a career in law, Lancaster was an educator, teaching English at J.Z. George High School and Duck Hill High School. He also served as Assistant Superintendent over Title I for the Montgomery County School District.
Lancaster is married to Rosemary R. Lancaster, and they make their home in Grenada. They are parents to daughter Leslie Lancaster, a teacher with the Grenada School District and coach of the Lady Chargers softball team.
Lancaster is a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Grenada, where he serves as Senior Warden and Chancellor.
