The bats came alive for Kosciusko softball the Saturday after Spring Break with 26 runs in 11 innings for two wins. The Lady Whippets defeated Northeast Lauderdale 17-2 and Union 9-4 in a tournament at West Lauderdale.
Coach Wade Moore gave his team some time off early in the week. “The break was something that we desperately needed. We used that to refresh.”
Against Northeast Lauderdale, Kosciusko scored one run in the first, four in the second, broke the game open with a nine-run third and closed it out with three in the fourth.
Isabella Wallace and GracieKate Burrell, the first two batters in the lineup, led the onslaught. Wallace singled, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored four times. Burrell had three singles and three runs scored.
They had plenty of help. Jules Black double twice and walked twice, Liza Wallace singled and doubled and Mailey Shaw doubled, scored twice and was the winning pitcher.
The Lady Whippets got off to a quick start against Union with two first-inning runs when the first three batters, Isabella Wallace, Burrell and Black, hit safely. All three had three hits, including two triplets and a double by Burrell.
Union tied it with two in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Whippets took the lead for good in the second when Marley Faulkner singled, was sacrificed to second by Brentley Smith and scored on a single by Isabella Wallace.
Kosciusko had a Region 4-4A doubleheader with Yazoo City Tuesday. The Lady Whippets will be at Germantown Friday and have a home for a game with Choctaw County Saturday.
