A Kosciusko police officer has been promoted.
Wilbert Nelson, formerly a lieutenant, was recently named to the rank of captain.
“It’s more responsibility, but I’m up for the task,” he said.
Nelson has also been serving as a shift commander for the past several months.
“The city and I both thought that he’s done a good job,” said Police Chief RJ Adams. “These past several months, he’s done his job, come in and done it in a way that’s set a standard for the men on his shift.”
Nelson, 44, is a Lexington native.
He has served in law enforcement for almost 20 years.
His career started in Texas at Bell County Sheriff’s Department. He also worked in Dallas, before moving in 2011 back to Mississippi, where he began working at the Lexington Police Department. There, Nelson worked his way up to chief investigator. Then, an opportunity came up for Nelson to transfer to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department. From there, he came to the Kosciusko Police Department in 2018.
“I don’t want to stay complacent,” Nelson said. “I want to move up, and you’ve got to start somewhere. So I just come to work, and do my job and hopefully continue to advance.”
Nelson said he got his work ethic from his father, Randy Nelson.
“It’s an honor,” he said about being promoted to captain. “And I’ll take it, but I don’t necessarily have to have it to do my job. I do it because I love what I do.”
