From press and staff reports
The holiday season in Kosciusko is officially underway after a large crowd gathered on the historic Square Thursday night, Nov. 20, for the annual Kosy Lights Christmas Tree Lighting and Entertainment on the Square.
Families filled the downtown area as the tree lit up against the night sky, marking the beginning of the festive season. The event, sponsored by Behind the Pines, featured live entertainment, food, and plenty of holiday cheer.
“This is one of our favorite nights of the year,” said a spokesperson for the Kosciusko Attala Partnership (KAP). “The Square looked beautiful, and it was wonderful to see so many families coming together to celebrate and kick off the Christmas season.”
The evening included holiday music, children’s activities, and appearances by Santa Claus himself. The KAP Leaders of Tomorrow hosted a Toy Drive, collecting new toys at Santa’s sleigh to benefit children in Attala County.
“Every single toy makes a difference,” said one volunteer. “It’s a great reminder of what this season is all about—giving and community.”
Guests also enjoyed train rides sponsored by Angel Macdonald – State Farm of Kosciusko, and carousel rides inside the Carousel House, sponsored by The Guitar Academy. Both attractions proved popular with families throughout the evening.
In addition to the kickoff celebration, KAP announced that Betty Ferguson has been named Grand Marshal of this year’s Kosciusko Christmas Parade.
Ferguson is known across Attala County for her selfless work painting wooden crosses to honor the memories of loved ones who have passed away.
“Betty truly embodies the spirit of giving and community,” KAP said in a statement. “Having her lead our Christmas Parade is the perfect way to celebrate the heart and soul of Kosciusko this holiday season.”
The Kosciusko Christmas Parade will take place in downtown Kosciusko next week, and residents are encouraged to come out and celebrate.
Holiday festivities continue across the county as McCool hosts its annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, in downtown McCool. The evening will include kids’ crafts, a silent auction, and photos with Santa Claus. Proceeds from the event will benefit the McCool Agricultural Building Restoration Project.
Organizers invite attendees to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters and enjoy a night of fun, fellowship, and community spirit as the holiday season shines bright across Attala County.
The celebrations will continue into December with the Ethel Christmas Parade, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. Lineup will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Ethel Baptist Church. This year’s parade theme is “Angels on High.”
