Kosciusko’s boys and girls soccer teams opened the 4A playoffs Saturday with victories over South
Pontotoc. Both teams will play at West Lauderdale Tuesday.
The Lady Whippets won 2-1 on a penalty kick in stoppage time. The Whippets had it much easier with a
6-1 victory.
Shelby Stewart scored both Lady Whippet goals. The first one came off a corner kick from Leeanna
Biggart with six minutes left in the first half. It looked like that might be enough, but South Pontotoc got
the equalizer with less than seven minutes left when Jannel Almazan scored on rebound.
Three minutes into stoppage time Stewart converted a penalty kick after South Pontotoc was whistled for
a hand ball in the penalty area.
Avery Nicholson and Christian Garci combined for three goals in the first 22 minutes of the boys game.
Nicholson converted passes from Garcia for the first two goals and assisted on a goal by Garcia.
The Whippets added three second half goals, two by Bryan Sabino and one by Garcia who also assisted
on one of Sabino’s goals.
South Pontotoc got on the scoreboard with 11 minutes left.
