Kosciusko boys and girls soccer teams both lost to 7A Starkville 3-0 in games that served as warm-ups for opening round 4A playoff games Saturday. Playoff games were postponed one week because of last week’s cold weather.
It was the ninth time in 18 games that the boys team was held scoreless. “We’re going to have to score. We’re getting a lot of zeroes,” coach Greg Cooper said.
Girls coach Mitchell Myer said the game was an opportunity to work out the kinks and find out where work is needed, especially on offense.
Players of the Game were Avery Nicholson for the Whippets and Klara Tran for the Lady Whippets.
“She created some good opportunities for us. She gave all she could,” Myer said of Tran.
Cooper credited Nicholson for his hard work.
The final tuneup was Tuesday against Murrah in Jackson.
As the winner of Region 4-4A, the Lady Whippets will host Senatobia, fourth place in 3-4A, at 1 p.m. That will be followed by the boys game with Kosciusko, second in 4-4A, against South Pontotoc, third in 3-4A.
Round 2 is scheduled for February 10. If the Lady Whippets defeat Senatobia they will have another home game against the Amory-North Pontotoc winner. The Kosciusko-South Pontotoc winner will play Amory or Tishomingo County at a site to be determined.
