The Kosciusko Board of Aldermen covered a range of business during its Feb. 17 meeting, including grant updates, personnel actions, equipment purchases and the approval of Municipal Court Amnesty Days.
The meeting opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by approval of minutes from the Feb. 3 meeting. No old business was discussed.
John Wiggers of the North Central Planning and Development District provided updates on Community Development Block Grant and HOME grant projects. Officials said work continues on engineering approvals and environmental clearances, while the HOME rehabilitation program is expected to relaunch after a temporary pause at the federal level. Wiggers also outlined several upcoming grant opportunities, including recreational trail, land and water conservation and Homeland Security funding.
The board approved publication of Section 3 information related to CDBG requirements encouraging contractors to hire qualified low-income residents when possible.
During public comments, Jane Russell addressed aldermen regarding concerns about tethering dogs in residential areas. Russell asked the board to review local ordinances and consider animal welfare and neighborhood safety when evaluating regulations.
In personnel matters, aldermen approved the seasonal rehiring of Parks Department employees, effective March 4, and accepted the resignations of part-time employees at the Police Department and one of the Fire Department, effective March 3.
Aldermen also approved Municipal Court Amnesty Days, authorized by Judge Jordan. The program runs from Feb. 18 through March 31 and allows individuals with unpaid traffic or misdemeanor fines to pay original balances while having contempt of court and failure-to-appear fees waived. City officials said the initiative is intended to help residents resolve outstanding cases without additional penalties. For more information, residents may call 662-289-7935.
Additional action included approval of a lease-purchase for a 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 for the Water and Wastewater Department, with Enterprise selected as the lowest quote. Travel requests for law enforcement training were approved. The board also approved the claims docket before adjourning. The next meeting is scheduled for March 3.
