John Provis, 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on May 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in the small village of Swinden, England, John was the youngest of five children born to George and Evelyn Provis. In 1949, John and his family journeyed to America aboard the historic RMS Queen Mary, beginning a new chapter that would shape the rest of his life. He proudly became a United States citizen in 1975.
John faithfully served in the United States Army for three years. Following his military service, he built a long and respected career with the US Postal Service, retiring in
2002. Throughout his years delivering mail in Greenville, he became deeply loved by the patrons along his route and was known for his kindness, work ethic, and friendly spirit.
After retirement, John and love of his life, Sandra Provis, returned to family land in Kosciusko, where he spent many happy years raising horses and enjoying the outdoors until he was no longer able. John and Sandra shared 63 beautiful years of marriage built on unwavering love, devotion, and faith. Their love story was one admired by everyone who knew them, a rare and lasting love that never faded with time. Through every season of life, they remained side by side, deeply devoted to one another. It was the kind of love most people hope to find but few are ever blessed enough to experience. Sandra was truly the center of John's world, and the life they built together was filled with laughter, strength, family, and unconditional love.
John was a man of many talents and passions. He loved fishing, hunting, horse racing, college softball, and spending time watching football and basketball. Some of his favorite athletes: Larry Bird, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Patrick Mahomes. One of his favorite stories to tell was about his appearance in the movie The Longest Day, where he drove a duck boat to shore.
Known as a true handyman, John could fix nearly anything and took great pride in caring for his family. One of his greatest accomplishments was building a professional in-ground swimming pool for his family to enjoy for many years. He also loved making homemade wine and took great joy in giving bottles away to anyone who stopped by the house. Sharing with others came naturally to him, and visitors rarely left empty-handed. John also enjoyed watching the Cutlery Corner Network, often ordering knives that he would later pass out to family and friends simply because he enjoyed giving to others.
More than anything, John loved being "Papaw." His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him endless joy and pride, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Whether sharing stories, watching sports together, teaching life lessons, or simply sitting and talking, he made each of them feel deeply loved. The bond he shared with his family was one of the greatest treasures of his life, and the memories they created together will be carried on for generations.
John loved music, especially Country and Gospel, and was happiest singing along to his favorite songs. Above all, he was a Christian whose faith guided life, marriage, and the way he treated others.
John was preceded in death by parents, George and Evelyn Provis; sisters, Gwen Provis and Rita Everitt; brothers, Graham and Barry Provis; and oldest son, Brian Provis.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Provis; son, Todd (Sandra) Provis; daughters, Stacy (Mark) Holland and Kim Provis; six grandchildren, Jon (Katie) Saunders, Steven (Mallie) Saunders, Ella Provis, Jacy Provis, Max Provis, and Luzie Provis; and four great-grandchildren, Jon Parker Saunders, Liza Kate Saunders, Sarah Saunders, and Stevie Saunders.
John will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his generous heart, his endless ability to fix and build, and the love he poured into his family and friends. Whether sharing stories, homemade wine, a pocket knife, or simply his time, John made people feel welcome and cared for. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the life he built with Sandra, and the many people blessed to know him.
